I am competitive, impulsive and I love gadgets. All of that can be a bad combination in the wrong hands, but I think I made a wise decision yesterday.
It drove me mad that my watch measured everything in steps. My steps have dropped to almost zero, and seeing that every day was majorly frustrating. I wanted something that recognised the effort I was actually putting in.
I found out that some of the newer Garmin models have the option to measure wheelchair pushes. As soon as I saw that, I became desperate to find a way to track my real movement and energy. So… I bought one.
I was sensible. I bought it second‑hand, at a reasonable price, a Garmin Venu 3S if you’re curious. It is effectively brand new but much cheaper and yes, I absolutely enjoyed receiving my new toy last night. I am grateful to the person who sold it to me (she had bought another one when she thought she had lost hers but then found it – sounds like me).
Now I finally feel like my wheelchair pushing is being acknowledged and rewarded. It probably sounds completely mad to some people, but this is my blog and this is what motivates me. I am the same with the exercise bike etc – I need to record it – just me and my unique qualities (or as some would say idiocies).
So I’m starting with a new goal: 2,000 pushes a day, the watch’s default target. I am going to try. I’m rather large, even if my BMI is not high because I’m 6 foot 5. Unfortunately, my chair doesn’t recognise height when it calculates effort.
Still, a new target means a new challenge and a reason to push myself. I should not need the motivation, of course, but I am who I am.
Boys and toys.
