Introduction to E-book
In the shadow of October 7, 2023, and while battling Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a rare, degenerative brain disease, I turned to writing. This book is not a traditional novel, but a curated collection of essays and blogs originally shared in the Times of Israel, reflecting on Jewish life, loss, faith, and even laughter.
Over this period, I’ve written about the Weekly Parshah (especially Bamidbar and Devarim), Jewish holidays reimagined through the lens of recent events, the power of unity in challenging times, and the humor that sustains me as a religious Jew living in Israel during war. While I have written more personally about my health journey elsewhere (at http://www.benlazpsp.com), this collection focuses on broader themes that connect us all.
These essays center on four threads:
- Parshat HaShavua
- Jewish Holidays
- Jewish Unity
- A touch of humor to lighten the journey
I hope these reflections offer comfort, perspective, and a sense of connection to anyone navigating difficult times. I pray PSP grants me the clarity to keep writing, and I am deeply grateful for the support that has made this journey possible.

To my amazing wife, Gayle, my partner for 28 years, whose love and strength have carried me through every challenge. To my three wonderful children, who are truly my life and my greatest source of pride. To all my friends and family, near and far, for your unwavering support and encouragement. To the many healthcare workers and professionals who have cared for me with such dedication and compassion. To the Times of Israel for giving me a forum to express my thoughts.
