I am sitting here recovering from what I can only describe as hell.
About half an hour ago, I was lying comfortably in bed when severe nerve pain suddenly exploded in my upper thigh. I have no idea what triggered it. What I do know is that it was unlike anything I have ever experienced before.
Until tonight, the worst pain I had known was a lumbar puncture that went wrong and hit a nerve twice. I screamed. This was worse. Much worse. And it didn’t let up.
My wife brought me a hot water bottle and ibuprofen, but neither touched it. I then reached for the massage gun I recently bought.
The next few minutes felt like a battle. The pain spread up, down and across my leg, from the groin area to just above the knee. Thankfully, the massage gun eventually started to make a difference and, little by little, I was able to get the pain under control.
Right now I am sitting upright with the massage gun beside me and my thigh massager running. The pain is hovering below 3/10. I refuse to lie down. Instead, I’m writing this and watching the World Cup to keep my mind occupied.
I am genuinely frightened that it will return.
I had been considering holding off on increasing my new medication, Gabapentin, but after tonight I will be speaking to my doctor in the morning.
I thought I understood pain. Tonight taught me otherwise.
For anyone who has experienced this kind of nerve pain, I would welcome any tips. At the moment, intense massage seems to be helping.
Why post this live?
Partly because writing helps keep my mind off the pain.
Partly because I want to know whether others have experienced something similar.
And partly because, right now, I am praying this was a one-off.
Post-script @ 7am: Horror Movie Part 1. It is now a dull 7/10. I’ve taken a second round of medication in the night. I spoke to a doctor. I took a combination of Octalgin, Ibuprofen, Acamol, Volteran, and CBD vape, basically everything I had and three whole water bottles.
I’m going to continue the drug routine of the new drug, which builds up slowly over time. Of course the massage gun, and I was able to get it under control. I was able to sleep for bed, in fact, 4 hours including the time before and after. Now it’s a dull 7/10. Now I’m speaking to my doctor later today to discuss what to do.
All of which is to say that I’m okay. We’re down from what I would call a 15/10. But I won’t pretend not to be scared,
