Two Mothers-in-Law for the Price of One

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

I publish this with the full knowledge and approval of my mother-in-law.

We were on a video call a few minutes ago when PSP decided to demonstrate one of its more unusual talents. Instead of one mother-in-law, I could see two.

Both were of equally excellent quality. One image sat slightly higher than the other, but otherwise they were identical.

Sadly, the bargain didn’t last. The moment I closed one eye, one of my mother-in-laws disappeared and I was back to the standard model.

Some people might say one mother-in-law is quite enough. Not me. I happen to be very fond of mine. Even so, I’d rather look at and speak to just one of her at a time.

My mum came for dinner two days ago and I only saw one of her. I only wish the excellent dinner she’d made had come in double portions instead.

The double vision, unfortunately, is another reminder that PSP never really stops trying new tricks.

The good news is that today also brought something far more encouraging. After another hard physiotherapy gym session involving weights, balance work and 20 kg bench presses, all carefully supervised by my physiotherapist and carer to make sure I didn’t end up on the floor, my physiotherapist smiled and said, “You’re improving.”

Those were two wonderful words to hear.

Exercise, together with better sleep, has become my biggest way of pushing back against this disease. I can’t control PSP, but I can still control how hard I work with the body that remains.

So today has brought mixed news.

One mother-in-law somehow became two.

My physiotherapist says I’m getting stronger.

I’ll happily keep the second piece of news and, with my mother-in-law’s blessing, I’d be perfectly content if the first one quietly disappeared.

On a serious note, I am incredibly fortunate to have such wonderful family around me, including my mum and my in-laws. They are worth far more than double.

P.S. A number of people kindly asked about the breathlessness I mentioned this morning. Today has been ok and I’m seeing my GP shortly. One chapter at a time.
